Technology Trends - BYOD, Sign of the Times

19 Sep 2012 | By The Maven TM Team

BYOD Tech TrendsAnd then there was BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) …… the growing technology trend that is fast becoming a major headache for IT Managers. Is it time for all organisations to accept the inevitable and embrace this new way of working?

For most organisations there is a growing use of mobile devices and with one third of workers expected to be mobile by 2013 and an increased number of employees taking it for granted that they can access the company network, regardless of any IT policies that may be in place, companies will benefit by having all parties on board. This brings IT challenges for both connectivity and data security.

However, there are increasing pressures on all companies to cut costs and increase productivity. Therefore does BYOD become a ‘no brainer’ if it allows employees to be more productive and if it enables them to respond to queries 24x7?

Does it not make more sense for companies to shift the focus from trying to impede BYOD to implementing an IT policy to safeguard sensitive data from security risks and information thefts?

How do businesses prepare for BYOD?

It is dangerous territory to expect an employee to protect a device which is loaded with sensitive company data. More often than not, people fail to use the basic security features like passwords and locks on their personal mobile devices. Some companies have already fallen foul of the dreaded Stolen Unencrypted Laptop.

Companies need to establish what resources they dedicate to the management of BYOD. They also need to decide which groups of users and types of devices can gain access to their different networks. The next crucial step is to ensure that they are fully equipped with a safeguard to protect against security risks and information thefts.

The fact remains that an increased number of people depend on their iPhones, iPads, Android-based smartphones, tablets etc. in everyday life, so it looks like BYOD is here to stay!
